BAD HARZBURG: ENGLISH IMPORT IN LAKE STEEPLECHASE SUCCESS

EVANDER, a winner four times over jumps when trained in England by Oliver Greenall, made it three victories in four starts for new trainer Christian von der Recke, when winning the Preis der Nordharzer Wirtschaft – Christian Möhlmann Memorial Seejagdrennen lake race on Sunday, denying race favourite and lake race veteran Wutzelmann in a thrilling finish.
Having won a flat race at Zweibrücken and a steeplechase at Strömsholm in Sweden since joining new connections last month, Evander appeared in the first of two Seejagdrennen held during the ‘Harzburger Rennwoche’ racing festival last Sunday. On that occasion, Evander, who had lost his jockey after slipping on the flat in the early stages of the race, took a left detour round the lake, avoiding the water completely. However, the eight year old was much happier to go for a swim this time around, and after an exciting battle with Wutzelmann, came home victorious under French jockey Hakim Tabet, landing the spoils by 1¾ lengths. Roxalagu, the only horse in training with owner-trainer Kamila Harms, was back in third, with Guiri and jockey Sonja Daroszewski, winners of last Sunday’s Seejagdrennen, fourth on this occasion after nearly coming to grief in the lake section of the race.
